On May 2, 2025, the central government inaugurated Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala. With an investment of Rs 88.67 billion, the port has been built by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited in partnership with the government under a public-private partnership model. With a natural depth of up to 20 metres, the port is expected to host larger container ships requiring more than 20 metres drafts.
The port will be developed in three phases. Once all phases are completed, the Vizhinjam Port will have an annual handling capacity of up to 5 million twenty-foot equivalent units with the total investment expected to reach Rs 180 billion.
