Goutom Chakraborty: Chief Executive Officer, GAIL Gas Limited

Goutom Chakraborty is an electrical engineer with an MBA in marketing, bringing over 32 years of rich and diverse experience in the oil and gas and petrochemical sectors. As a well-known pipeline integrity and gas measurement expert, his expertise spans multiple functions, including the operations and maintenance (O&M) of cross-country natural gas pipelines and gas processing units, as well as managing GAIL’s renewable energy portfolio in wind and solar energy. Additionally, he is experienced in the city gas distribution (CGD) segment, contributing to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions. His extensive background equips him with a unique perspective on integrating technology and innovation within the industry.

Since April 2023, Chakraborty has served as chief executive officer of GAIL Gas Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited. In his current role, he leads the company with a strong vision for growth and innovation, driving strategic initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and expand market presence. Chakraborty has taken the company to new heights with his leadership. Prior to this, he served as executive director at GAIL (India) Limited, where he managed the national gas management centre, pipeline central integrity management group and O&M functions, along with the company’s CGD business and renewable verticals. In addition to his role at GAIL Gas, he is also actively involved in guiding the company’s joint ventures. He serves as chairman of Purba Bharati Gas Private Limited and Goa Natural Gas Private Limited, and is a director at Andhra Pradesh Gas Distribution Corporation Limited.

Chakraborty anticipates robust growth in the CGD sector, driven by advancements in infrastructure, smart cities and digital transformation. According to him, “With the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board covering nearly 90 per cent of cities in India, we are poised to see a nationwide expansion of natural gas infrastructure. This includes a comprehensive network of compressed natural gas stations serving all routes, alongside an extensive pipeline system that will connect every city, town and street, ensuring a far-reaching and sustainable energy supply across the country.”

His management style is transformational and situational, focusing on goal setting, guidance and team collaboration. In crises, he remains decisive and adaptable, prioritises urgent actions and communicates transparently, fostering a culture of trust, accountability and effective problem-solving under pressure.
