Shantanu Roy is the chairman and managing director of BEML Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ company under the Ministry of Defence, GoI established in 1964, serving India’s core sectors – defence and aerospace, railways and metro rail and mining and construction. With over 32 years of experience in capital goods sectors such as defence, mining, energy security, transportation, transmission, renewables and power, he has a comprehensive understanding of the industry landscape and its operational intricacies.
Under his leadership, BEML is making significant strides in the transportation and defence sectors. The upcoming launch of India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper trainset underscores BEML’s commitment to advancing India’s rail infrastructure. In his earlier role as director of the mining and construction vertical, Roy led the company to a remarkable leap in its overall performance, indicating his strong leadership and strategic acumen. Prior to this, he served as head of northern region operations, strategy and new initiatives, coordination and international business.
Roy is helping BEML pursue global and domestic opportunities, ensure compliance with regulations and implement effective risk management practices. Moreover, he holds a Six Sigma Black Belt certification. His strategy is focused on enhancing BEML’s manufacturing facilities combined with sales force, based in Bengaluru, Palakkad, Mysuru and KGF, to meet global standards.
During Roy’s tenure as head of marketing and business development at BHEL, the company emerged as a key player in the supercritical thermal power segment, securing its largest-ever export order worth $1.5 billion for the 2×660 MW Maitree supercritical thermal power project in Bangladesh. Roy truly recognises the potential of urban transportation, particularly rail and metro systems, and aims to position BEML at the forefront of these developments in the global arena.
