Vizhinjam International Seaport handles over 1 million TEUs within nine months of beginning commercial operations

Vizhinjam International Seaport has achieved a remarkable feat by handling over 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) within just nine months of beginning commercial operations. This performance far exceeded expectations under the concession agreement, which had envisaged operating at merely 30 per cent capacity in its first year.

Launched on December 3, 2024, the port is operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone. It has already handled around 460 vessels, including 26 ultra‑large container vessels (ULCVs) measuring up to 399.99 metres.

With export-import (EXIM) operations slated to begin in the fourth quarter of FY 2025-26, the port is expected to amplify its global trade role. Sustainability is also a key focus, with ongoing efforts to reduce emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and integrate greener practice.
