India targets recycling of 16,000 ships over the next decade

India plans to recycle around 16,000 ships over the next decade as part of its strategy to strengthen its position as a global hub for sustainable ship recycling. The initiative is backed by an $8 billion commitment to expand shipbuilding and recycling infrastructure while improving environmental and safety standards.

India and the European Union (EU) are also working to secure wider recognition of Indian recycling yards under the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, with audits and compliance processes underway.
