Atasi Das: HOD, PMG Division and Assistant VP, G R Infraprojects Limited

Atasi Das,  a distinguished figure in India’s civil engineering landscape, has over two decades of experience in international consulting and on-ground infrastructure development. A graduate of Jadavpur University, she further honed her technical prowess with a master’s degree in Transportation and Geotechnics from the University of Delaware. She is a BIS-certified lead quality auditor and a life member of several leading engineering institutions. Currently, she is also pursuing a PhD at IIT Roorkee.

Das’s early career saw her contribute to landmark projects, including the Woodrow Wilson Bridge during her tenure at Rummel, Klepper and Kahl in the United States. From 2003 to 2006, she played a pivotal role as a pavement-material-geotechnical (PMG) engineer with the Maryland State Highway Administration, managing critical highway undertakings.

Das currently heads the PMG division at G R Infraprojects Limited as assistant vice president, overseeing major highway projects nationwide. With nearly a decade of experience in construction, following 15 years in consulting, Das is recognised as a prominent voice advocating for sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Her areas of specialisation include perpetual pavements, advanced stabilisation technologies, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) utilisation, geosynthetic ground treatments and slope stabilisation, especially in geotechnically complex terrains. Das anticipates a growing focus on sustainable and resilient infrastructure, driven by green technologies and recycled materials such as RAP. According to her, “Long-life pavement design will become more prominent to reduce maintenance costs and environmental impact. Digitalisation, automation and smart construction techniques will also enhance project efficiency and quality.”

Her core strengths lie in her deep understanding of PMG, supported by broad experience in both consulting and execution. She brings strong leadership and technical capabilities to the table, especially in identifying innovative, sustainable solutions. One challenge she navigates is balancing high-level strategic leadership with the need to remain hands-on with technical intricacies in a fast-growing organisation.

Das practises a collaborative and results-driven management approach, viewing transparent communication and decisive action as the cornerstones of effective crisis management. Das is deeply passionate about mentoring young engineers and encouraging young women in construction. She actively participates in initiatives promoting sustainable development and community empowerment.
