Tata Electronics Private Limited is reportedly preparing to produce India’s first semiconductor wafers using technology significantly older than originally envisaged, highlighting the challenges the country faces in building a domestic chip industry from scratch.
The tech arm of the Tata conglomerate is preparing to construct the country’s first large-scale chip fabrication plant primarily based on 90-nanometre (nm) process technology at its facility in Dholera, Gujarat.
The 90nm node is a mature technology used in lower-end industrial and automotive applications, and one that risks becoming obsolete in the coming years. It also represents a considerably more modest start than the 28nm node that Tata Sons Private Limited, the group’s holding company, had cited as the starting point of its chipmaking ambitions in its annual report for the year ended March 2025.
