The Union Government inaugurated the Dahod locomotive manufacturing plant of Indian Railways (IR) in Gujarat on May 26, 2025. Built with an investment of around Rs 214 billion, the plant will manufacture 9,000 horsepower (hp) electric locomotives for both domestic and international markets. Each locomotive will have the capacity to haul 4,600 tonnes of freight. The facility is capable of producing 120 locomotives annually, with the potential to scale up to 150 units per year.
Additionally, IR’s first 9,000 hp electric locomotive, manufactured at the Dahod plant, was also inaugurated. This locomotive features a regenerative braking system, designed to reduce energy consumption and enhance the overall freight capacity of IR.
