Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) likely to start operations by end of 2024

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to start operations by the end of 2024 while adding around 40 per cent more flight handling capacity to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s (MMR) airports. The capacity of its terminal 1 (T-1) will be 0.02 billion passengers per annum which is two times the original plan. The area of T-1 is 0.2 million sq m and is designed as per the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s gold standards. The facilities in T-1 include body scanners for passenger screening and 3-dimensional computer tomography X-ray (CTX) handbag scanners. There are plans to provide 17 CTX at the airport which will be further increased to 19. Phases 1 and 2 of the airport will also accommodate parking for 60 jets addressing the increased demand for private aircraft in MMR. Additionally, around three supply lines for dedicated aviation turbine fuel will also be delivered to NMIA. The airport would help cater to the high demand for air travel in the region as the present airport of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is faced with space shortage with a peak handling capacity of 0.05 billion passengers per annum.
