The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway project has been proposed to be developed by NHAI under the BharatmalaPariyojana. The expressway is being developed in two phases, with Phase I expected to entail an investment of Rs 250 billion. The alignment of the expressway was firmed up in January 2019 and the process of land acquisition was then initiated. Initially, the Jammu & Kashmir government had proposed an expressway connectivity from Delhi to Katra. However, the MoRTH proposed that the expressway would pass through Amritsar, considering the religious importance of the city. Subsequently, in June 2020, the ministry announced the development of a new greenfield connectivity to Amritsar from Nakodar via SultanpurLodhi, Goindwal Sahib and Khadoor Sahib as part of the Delhi-Amritsar expressway. Reportedly, NHAI has also cleared a Rs 40 billion project as part of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway project to provide faster connectivity from Ludhiana to Chandigarh.
