The MoRTH has approved the construction of an access-controlled greenfield expressway connecting the capital city of Amaravati with Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh. The ministry has envisaged to initially develop it as a four-lane expressway, with provision for upgradation to eight lanes in the future depending on the traffic requirement. The state government has agreed to transfer the government land free of cost and bear 50 per cent of the cost of land acquisition. It has also agreed to obtain the necessary statutory clearances for the project. Reportedly, the state government has recently proposed changes in the alignment of the expressway to connect it with NH-16, instead of running parallel to it. This will reduce the length of the expressway by about 47 km and will lead to a cost saving of Rs 35 billion.
