The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has proposed the setting up of tertiary treatment plants of 260 million litre per day (mld) capacity in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The project involves construction of sewage treatment plants (STPs) with sequential batch reactor technology and biogas power generation with a view to recycling sewage into potable drinking water. A total of four STPs in Perungudi, Nesapakkam, Koyambedu and Kodungalyur districts will be constructed under the project, benefiting around seven lakes and waterbodies in the city. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 10 billion. Currently, the CMWSSB has issued tenders for construction of the STPs in Nesapakkam and Perungudi on a pilot basis, while tenders for the remaining two STPs are likely to be issued soon.
