The Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) has begun ranking India’s oil and gas fields. This is being done to bring in competition in the domestic market and help boost domestic output which has been stagnant for several years now. The ranking is based on a field’s performance on 10 key parameters. These include the output of the field, use of new technology, energy efficiency of the field, reduction in flaring, safety standards, financial audit of the field, etc. State firms have already joined the ranking programme and have begun sharing data needed for the purpose. Private companies are expected to join soon.
