India in final stages of rolling out ISM 2.0

According to the chief executive officer (CEO), India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), India is in the final stages of launching the ISM 2.0, which will have a broader scope to strengthen the country’s semiconductor ecosystem and address both domestic and global demand for skilled talent, according to a senior government official.

Under the second phase of the programme, the centre plans to extend incentives to semiconductor equipment manufacturing, the production of specialty chemicals and gases, indigenous chip design and the development of resilient supply chains.

The CEO said the government will support additional segments of the semiconductor value chain alongside existing incentives for chip design, packaging and manufacturing to enable the holistic development of the ecosystem.

He added that the incentive structure under ISM 2.0 has been revised and that the government will conduct stakeholder consultations to create awareness about the new scheme.

According to the official, ISM 2.0 will also expand its focus to address the growing demand for skilled semiconductor professionals in India and overseas, leveraging the country’s large science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) talent pool.
