Justice N.N. Tiwari: Chairperson, Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission

Chairperson, Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission

Justice N. N. Tiwari
Justice N.N. Tiwari brings to the table about four decades of legal experience. With a degree in law from C.N. College, Ranchi, Tiwari enrolled as an advocate in 1975. In 2002, he was designated senior advocate in the Jharkhand High Court, and later, in 2004, was elevated to the position of high court judge. He was appointed chairperson of the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission (JSERC) in August 2014 after he demitted the office of judge of the Jharkhand High Court in May 2014.

With regard to the power sector, Tiwari feels that although at present it is not able to fulfil the expectations of consumers, it is fast heading towards a breakthrough. “The power sector is facing a financial crunch. High transmission and distribution losses and aggregate technical and commercial losses, and the lack of proper infrastructure and grid connectivity in rural areas are the main problems impeding cost economic, 24×7 quality power supply,” he says. However, he believes that the recent initiatives launched by the Government of India to reform the power sector will help overcome the bottlenecks and create a conducive environment for the sector’s development. “Schemes like the Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana and the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana are remarkable steps. Moreover, the thrust on renewable energy generation, deployment of smart grids and development of a competitive power market are welcome steps for the accelerated growth of the sector,” Tiwari remarks. Reflecting on his most memorable assignment, he fondly remembers his tenure as judge of the high court. Commenting on his management style, he says, “Honest adherence to the provisions of the law is my style of management while conducting the affairs of the commission.”

To maintain a healthy work-life balance, Tiwari focuses on maintaining good health and devotes time to practising yoga, meditation as well as physical exercise. He enjoys listening to Indian classical music and ghazals. An avid reader, he particularly likes reading the works of Shakespeare, Eliot, Tennyson, Wordsworth, Keats, Emerson, Benjamin Franklin and Tolstoy, as well as scriptures and religious books. He also cherishes the desire to write books related to law and his life experiences. Tiwari’s family includes his mother, two sons and a daughter.
