According to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) outstanding debt stood at Rs 76.66 billion as of January 2016, while that of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) stood at Rs 135.29 billion. The primary component of BSNL’s debt is its capital expenditure requirement that started in June 2010 after the payment of Rs 185 billion as charges for broadband wireless access (BWA) and 3G spectrum. For MTNL, too, the debt has accrued mainly due to the payment of Rs 110.97 billion for BWA and 3G spectrum.
