The union minister for ports, shipping and waterways has laid the foundation stones for India’s first riverine lighthouses along the Brahmaputra river, marking a major step in strengthening inland waterway navigation. The project, undertaken by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships in collaboration with the Inland Waterways Authority of India, will establish four lighthouses, at Pandu, Bogibeel, Silghat and Biswanath Ghat along the National Waterway-2. The total investment for the project is about Rs 840 million. Each lighthouse will be about 20 metres tall, with a geographical range of 14 nautical miles and a luminous range of 8-10 nautical miles, and will operate entirely on solar power.
