Rs 510 million tunnel-style service road planned on Bengaluru airport highway

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited bids for a Rs 510 million project to build a 6-metre deep depressed service road on the Bengaluru airport highway, addressing a critical gap in the 22.12-km Hebbal-Trumpet stretch of NH-44. This underpass-style road, the longest in Bengaluru, will span 320 metre covered and 800 metre at surface level, easing congestion and accidents by keeping local traffic off the main carriageway. It connects the Indian Air Force (IAF) station’s domestic and technical areas, linking the runway to Hunasamaranahalli Lake.

Constructed via the cut-and-cover method, trenching, building, and backfilling, the tunnel differs from tunnel boring machine (TBM) techniques used elsewhere. Additionally, the 18-month project aims for completion before Aero India 2027, without traffic diversions.
