Indian Railways (IR) has planned to develop Vande Bharat Sleeper train with 24 coaches and 1,224 berths at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. Currently, these trains are at design phase with prototype rake planned to be launched by December 2026. The trains will have 17 air-conditioned (AC) 3-tier coaches, five AC 2-tier coaches, one AC 1-tier coach and one AC pantry car. It will be designed to achieve maximum speed of 160 km per hour (kmph).
Besides, it will be equipped with advanced propulsion and control system, Kavach, Wireless Fidelity (Wi-fi) enabled passenger information and infotainment systems, closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance, and stainless-steel car body adhering to current safety standards among others. Presently, the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains comprise of 16 coaches and 823 berths.
