Union Government inaugurates, lays foundation stone for Rs 8.3 billion infrastructure projects in West Bengal

The Union Government has inaugurated and laid foundation stones for infrastructure development projects worth over Rs 8.3 billion in Singur, Hooghly district, West Bengal, on January 18, 2026. These initiatives span rail and inland waterways, boosting multimodal connectivity, cargo movement, and passenger travel while promoting sustainable transport.
Projects worth Rs 5.52 billion under ports and inland waterways include the Extended Port Gate System at Balagarh by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority. The Balagarh facility includes a modern barge terminal with two berths capable of handling containerised and coal cargo, with a projected capacity of 2.7 million tonnes per annum. A Rs 120 million hybrid electric aluminium catamaran for 50 passengers advances green inland transport using lithium-titanate batteries.
