The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved an $850 million loan to support the second phase of the Accelerating Affordable and Inclusive Rooftop Solar Systems Development Program in India. The financing will support the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to install rooftop solar systems for 10 million households and add 30 GW of residential rooftop solar capacity by FY 2027.
The loan will support financial assistance for at least 3.5 million rooftop solar installations, strengthen digital application and monitoring systems, improve grid readiness, and encourage greater participation of distribution companies and the private sector. It will also support domestic manufacturing, energy storage, recycling, and household adoption of clean energy. In addition, the programme will provide training and certification to at least 6,000 people, with at least one-third being women, while promoting model solar villages, strengthening vendor accountability, and improving recycling of solar photovoltaic panels and battery waste.
