Ministry of Coal simplifies approval mechanism for exploration programmes

The Ministry of Coal has simplified the approval mechanism for exploration programmes and geological reports for coal and lignite blocks to accelerate project timelines.

Under the revised framework, geological reports prepared by notified accredited prospecting agencies (APAs) accredited by Quality Council of India (QCI) and peer-reviewed by another APA will no longer require approval from the committee constituted by the ministry in January 2022. This is expected to save up to three months in the approval process, facilitating faster operationalisation of coal blocks.

The new methodology is part of the ministry’s broader efforts to modernise exploration processes and harness private sector capabilities. By enhancing the role of accredited private agencies, the ministry aims to promote technological innovation, ensure high technical standards, and improve transparency in coal and lignite exploration.
