Government advances smartphone PLI 2.0 and sets goal of designing 30 domestic chipsets

The government of India has begun working closely with industry stakeholders to develop the next phase of the smartphone Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, informally called PLI 2.0. According to the the union minister of Information Technology and Electronics, the upcoming programme aims to raise the share of locally produced components in smartphones and other electronics to 35 to 40 per cent over the next few years, building on gains made under the existing scheme.

The minister also stated that the government intends to design and manufacture 30 strategic chipsets within the country, meant for both domestic use and exports.

Further, the PLI 2.0 is being drafted in consultation with the industry, with a focus on increasing domestic value addition and expanding component manufacturing. Multiple fabrication and design projects are currently in progress, and the government aims to significantly enhance local capability in chip design and manufacturing in the coming years.
