V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Thoothukudi has become the first Indian port to successfully produce green hydrogen and achieve over 1 MW of rooftop power generation. As part of the NAVIC Cell-3 program, VOC Port and other major ports have already started shifting to more energy-efficient systems. The NAVIC Cell is actively working to make inland waterways more environmentally friendly by using renewable energy and energy-efficient equipment; and promoting green fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), ammonia, and hydrogen.
The port handled 14.66 million tonnes of cargo and 289,074 twenty-foot equivalent units of containers during April-July period of 2025-26. This marks a 5.37 per cent growth in overall cargo traffic and 9.02 per cent growth in container traffic as compared to the corresponding period of 2024-25.
