The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has conducted a safety inspection on the 16.4 km long Peralam-Thirunallar section and the 7.7 km long Thirunallar-Karaikal section under the Tiruchchirappalli-Nagore-Karaikal with extension of Nagapattinam-Velankani-Tiruthiraipundi Gauge Conversion Project.
The project involves conversion of Tiruchchirappalli-Nagore-Karaikal rail line from meter gauge (MG) to broad gauge (BG) along with extension of Nagapattinam-Velankani-Tiruthiraipundi, including new material modification (MM) of 23 km long Karaikal-Peralam new rail line in Tamil Nadu. It entails a cost of Rs 15.98 billion.
