The central government laid foundation stone for the Vadhavan Port project on August 30, 2024. The project involves development of an all-weather port at Vadhavan, 140 km north to Mumbai in Maharashtra. It will be developed as a landlord port by Vadhavan Port Project Limited, a joint venture of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust as the lead partner with equity participation of 74 per cent and Maharashtra Maritime Board with 26 per cent at an estimated cost of Rs 762.2 billion with a capacity of 298 million tonnes per annum including 9.87 million twenty-foot equivalent units.
Additionally, the central government inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 218 fisheries projects worth around Rs 15.6 billion. The vessel communication and support system is launched at a cost of Rs 3.6 billion. The foundation stone was laid for important fishery infrastructure projects including development, upgradation and modernisation of fishing harbours, fish landing centers and construction of fish markets.
