BRO nears completion of strategic road projects along China border

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is nearing completion of critical road infrastructure projects near the China border, including essential road segments on a new all-weather route to Leh, expected to be finished within weeks. Under the Defence Ministry’s India-China Border Roads (ICBR) programme, the BRO is also working on full connectivity to the Lipulekh Pass on the Mansarovar Yatra Road in Uttarakhand, with completion targeted by the end of 2024.

Key projects include the final 4 km section of the Nimu-Padam-Darcha road, nearing completion, and the nearly finished Leh-Demchok road in eastern Ladakh, which is planned for future expansion to a double-lane road. The BRO has identified four roads, totaling 330.95 km, in Arunachal Pradesh under the ICBR’s first phase and is preparing detailed project reports for 14 additional roads under phase III, focusing on crucial links to the line of actual control.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the 2.79 km Sungal tunnel, aimed at reducing travel time to Rajouri and Poonch, is also progressing. The 1,800 km frontier highway in Arunachal Pradesh, supported by over Rs 60 billion in central funds, remains a key priority for the BRO.
