The central government inaugurated three interception and diversion (I&D) and sewage treatment plants (STP) projects in West Bengal on March 1, 2024. These include the construction of new STPs of total capacity of 165 mld at Howrah, Bally, Baranagar and Kamarhati; rehabilitation of existing 22 mld STP in Bally, pumping stations; laying of 16 km of sewerage network and associated infrastructure in Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority area with operation and maintenance for 15 years. The projects have been implemented under the ‘One City-One Operator’ scheme on hybrid annuity basis through public-private partnership model under the Namami Gange programme. The cost of the project is Rs 6 billion and has been funded by the World Bank.
