Indian Railways (IR) has inducted two digitally enabled locomotives based on the state-of-the-art insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology in collaboration with General Electric (GE). The two locomotives have been designed under Make in India through an MoU signed between the two entities. As per the agreement, GE will provide the locomotive technology to IR through a joint venture (JV) company and manufacture 1,000 fuel-efficient locomotives (100 per year). Of these, 700 locomotives will be of 4,500 horse power (HP) and the remaining 300 locomotives will be of 6,000 HP. Initially, 40 fuel efficient diesel locomotives will be manufactured at the GE facility in Pennsylvania, USA, after which, the remaining 960 diesel locomotives will be manufactured in Marhoura, Bihar.
