India’s first fully automated dry bulk terminal at Haldia, inaugurated

On March 14, 2026, the union government inaugurated the Haldia Bulk Terminal developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, marking the launch of India’s first fully automated dry bulk cargo facility. Located at the Haldia Dock Complex of the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in West Bengal, the terminal is expected to significantly improve cargo handling efficiency along India’s eastern maritime corridor. The facility, situated on the western bank of the Hooghly River, has an annual cargo handling capacity of 4 mtpa. It is equipped with advanced mechanised systems and direct rail connectivity, enabling cargo to move directly from ships to railway wagons. This reduces manual handling, cargo losses and turnaround time, while improving operational efficiency. The terminal primarily handles imported coal and other dry bulk commodities that support industries such as steel, aluminium and power generation in eastern India. The project was developed under a 30-year concession using the DBFOT model.
