TBMs achieve significant progress under Bhopal Metro Rail Project Phase I

Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) has achieved significant progress on two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) under the Bhopal Metro Rail Project Phase I.

TBM-1 (named Durgavati) has already bored 7 metres of a temporary tunnel and 3.3 metres of a permanent tunnel. It is operating at a depth of 24 metres (75 feet) to minimise surface vibrations for residents. Whereas, TBM-2 is nearing full operation on the Aishbagh-Sindhi Colony stretch, which connects Bhopal Railway Station to the Nadra Bus Stand.

The tunnels are being constructed through densely populated urban areas. The project utilises advanced monitoring technology to adhere to strict technical and safety standards, aiming for “world-class, eco-friendly connectivity” while preserving the city’s heritage.

The Bhopal Metro Project involves development of a metro rail transit system in Madhya Pradesh comprising two corridors of total length of 27.87 km at an estimated cost of Rs 69.4 billion.
