Inland waterways projects worth Rs 5.26 billion launched to boost connectivity and tourism in Assam

Union Government has inaugurated and launched multiple infrastructure projects worth Rs 5.26 billion in Guwahati, aimed at strengthening inland waterways, logistics, tourism, and skill development in Assam. The projects are being implemented by the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

A key project inaugurated is the Rs 1.8 billion elevated road corridor linking the Pandu Port to National Highway-27. This corridor addresses last-mile connectivity issues between river terminals and the highway network, reducing congestion and improving logistics efficiency in the region.

Besides, foundation stones were laid for cruise terminals at Biswanath Ghat and Neamati Ghat on the Brahmaputra River, with a combined investment of Rs 1.58 billion. These terminals are expected to expand river cruise tourism, improve passenger facilities, and create economic opportunities for local communities, including artisans and small businesses.

Additionally, a Rs 1.88 billion Regional Centre of Excellence will be built at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh to train over 5,000 students annually in inland navigation and maritime logistics. The projects aim to enhance trade, employment, and regional connectivity, while positioning Assam as a key hub for inland water transport and tourism in India’s Northeast region.
