NTPC to explore international collaborations to advance nuclear power plans

Reportedly, NTPC Limited is exploring multiple international collaborations on nuclear technology and fuel as part of its strategy to diversify its generation portfolio and scale up company-owned nuclear capacity in India.

The company is targeting around 30 GW of nuclear power projects across various locations, aligned with the government’s long-term objective of achieving 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. NTPC aims to commission about 2 GW of nuclear capacity by 2032. On the technology front, the company has entered into non-disclosure agreements with global nuclear players including Rosatom and EDF to explore collaboration on large pressurised water reactor projects in India. In parallel, NTPC is also in discussions with Holtec International for the potential deployment of small modular reactors, which offer modular construction, enhanced safety features and phased capacity addition. NTPC is also evaluating a minority equity investment in US-based clean core thorium energy as a strategic early-stage investment subject to due diligence and statutory approvals.
