A $400 million results-based lending (RBL) scheme to enhance road connectivity in Maharashtra has been approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The loan will be utilised to improve road connectivity in 34 districts, especially in the economically underdeveloped and climate-vulnerable Marathwada and Vidarbha areas. This will connect rural residents to markets, logistical centres, healthcare, education, and other vital services. These improvements span 2,577 km of rural roads and approximately 350 km of state highways. According to ADB, more than 1.7 million people who live within walking distance of better roads will benefit, including those who live in around 80 villages and 410 rural settlements. The RBL modality ensures coordinated development assistance and shared goals by enabling the implementing agencies to combine resources and coordinate activities towards shared outcomes.
