The union minister for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the progress of all four semiconductor chip fabrication projects currently under development in Gujarat.
The union minister noted that all four projects are progressing well. He emphasised that India’s expanding focus on electronics manufacturing and semiconductor fabrication forms an essential pillar of the country’s long-term economic growth strategy.
Further, he stated that Micron’s mini-plant has already commenced pilot production and is in the process of scaling up, while construction of the fabrication facility at Dholera is advancing steadily.
Since the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) in 2021, the country has witnessed notable progress towards its semiconductor goals. To support this, the government introduced a Rs 760 billion production linked incentive (PLI) scheme, with a substantial share of the allocation already committed across projects.
Additionally, on August 28, 2025, one of the first end-to-end Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) pilot line facilities was inaugurated in Sanand, Gujarat. Semiconductor firm CG-Semi also produced the first ‘Made in India’ chip at this unit. In June 2023, the government had approved the first proposal to establish a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Sanand.
To date, the government has approved ten semiconductor manufacturing projects with a cumulative investment exceeding Rs 1.6 trillion across six states namely, Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. MeiTY has already begun work on the next phase of India’s semiconductor initiative, titled Semicon 2.0.
