Pace of national highway construction drops to 29km/day in 2024-25 

As per the centre, national highway development had slowed down to 29 km per day in 2024-25. Previously, highway development reached a rate of 34 km per day in 2023-2024. Moreover, in 2020-21, it reached the highest reported speed of 37 km per day. In 2024-2025, the ministry built 10,660 km of national highways; in 2023-2024, it built 12,349 km; and in 2022-2023 it built 10,331 km.

In order to increase the nation’s logistical efficiency, the government is now focused on constructing greenfield access-controlled highways and high-speed corridors. This has led to the awarding of 26 greenfield corridors totalling approximately 7,500 km, with an additional 600 km already approved. Approximately 4,800 km of this have been built thus far. Of this, around 2,636 km is already operational; while the other sections will be completed over the next two years.
