Kottayam Port and Container Terminal (KPCT) is exploring a new inland waterways link with the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala. This move is strongly backed by the government of Kerala and port authorities, and aims to streamline cargo transshipment from Kottayam to Vizhinjam, reducing reliance on road transport and easing congestion at Kochi. With the connectivity link, daily movement is expected reach around 30 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) via inland waterways.
Furthermore, the expansion plans of KPCT received a significant boost with a UK-based firm expressing interest in investing in the project. With an investment of Rs 200 million, the three-stage development includes building infrastructure such as container yards, berths, and warehouses, and purchasing equipment.
KPCT is India’s pioneering inland container depot. Operational since 2012 and situated on national waterway‑9, KPCT has handled over 25,000 TEUs and contributed Rs 920 million in tax revenue. Key commodities handled include natural rubber, rubber mats, clinker, and machinery.
