The Department of Atomic Energy has released tariff norms for nuclear power plants for the five-year period starting FY23, retaining the return on equity at 15.5 per cent of the project cost.
The notified return on equity remains aligned with that applicable to thermal power plants under the ongoing FY24–FY28 tariff cycle. India currently has 8.8 GW of installed nuclear capacity, contributing around 3 per cent to the country’s total power generation. Eight reactors with a cumulative capacity of 6,600 MW are under construction, while 7,000 MW is in pre-project stages. The government has set a long-term target of 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 to enhance energy security.
