The centre has approved the Rs 36.67 billion annual plan for the construction and improvement of roads, bridges and other infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh. The plan calls for building bridges, enlarging roads, installing crash barriers and performing other tasks on national highways in different parts of the state.
The state now has over 1,200 km of highways that are part of the national highway network, and it has asked for more central support for road maintenance and repair as well as other associated projects. In 2023-24, the state had filed an annual plan of Rs 26 billion, but it only received Rs 2.69 billion, which was insufficient. However, in June 2025, the centre approved Rs 36.67 billion that the state government had sought for 2024-25.
Additionally, it has approved the construction of a tunnel under Jalori Jot in Kullu district in principle and approved a budget of Rs 14.52 billion for the project.
The stretch of National Highway-5 (Hindustan-Tibet Road) near Brauni Nala in Shimla district has sustained significant damage as a result of numerous landslides; in order to remedy this, the centre has authorised Rs 1.35 billion for the construction of a bridge in this area.
In addition, Rs 13.85 billion has been approved by the centre for the four-laning of the Kala Amb Paonta Sahib on the Dehradun road. This includes pre-construction and land acquisition.
