Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) approves various projects for advancements in the inland water transport sector

Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has approved various projects for advancements in the inland water transport (IWT) sector. This decision was taken in its 198th Board meeting held in Delhi on June 25, 2025.

These projects include:

  • Setting up three tourist jetties in Silghat, Bishwanath Ghat and Guijan and one tourist-cum-cargo jetty in Neamati in Assam.
  • Development of a Regional Centre of Excellence in Bogibeel, Dibrugarh in Assam.
  • Development of a land parcel of about 2,154 square metres in Fancy Bazar, Guwahati through Indian Port Rail and Ropeway Corporation Limited.
  • Development of an extended port gate system at Balagarh in West Bengal by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

The IWAI Board has also entrusted the task of the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) for the upcoming ship repair facility at Patna, Bihar to the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts, IIT Madras.

It has approved cadre review report for restructuring of IWAI by the National Institute of Smart Government.

The Board has decided to set up the Indian Waterway Congress, on the lines of the Indian Road Congress, to identify and use best global practices, promote standardisation and deploy cutting-edge technologies for sustainable growth in the IWT sector.
