Indian Railways allocates funds for suburban rail projects in Maharashtra

Indian Railway has allocated funds worth Rs 17.77 billion, of which Rs 1 billion is for Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) phase II, Rs 8 billion for MUTP phase III and Rs 8.77 billion for MUTP Phase III A.

The MUTP phase II project involves the development of the fifth and sixth lines of the Kurla-Mumbai CSMT corridor at an estimated cost of Rs 80.87 billion.

MUTP Phase III project includes quadrupling the Virar-Dahanu section (64 km), development of new suburban railway tracks between Panvel and Karjat (28 km), trespass control on the mid-section on 36 priority sections of existing lines of Central and Western Railway, procurement of rolling stock and development of an elevated link from Airoli to Kalwa in Maharashtra.

MUTP phase III A project involves expansion of existing rail lines, introducing new rail corridors, procuring AC locals and arrangements for their parking, station redevelopment and improving signalling system. It is an extension of MUTP phase III and includes a number of already sanctioned projects.
