Top 10 toll plazas collect Rs 140 billion in 5 years

The top ten toll plazas in India have collected around Rs 140 billion in the past five years.  As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Bharthana, located on Gujarat’s Vadodara-Bharuch section of NH-48, has collected the highest user fees of Rs 20.43 billion from 2019–20 to 2023–24, with the highest collection of Rs 4.72 billion in 2023-24. Following this is the Shahjahanpur toll plaza in Rajasthan, situated on the Gurgaon-Kotputli-Jaipur section of NH-48. This toll plaza collected Rs 18.84 billion in the past five years.

West Bengal’s Jaladhulagori toll plaza, generated Rs 15.38 billion in tolls during the same period. It is located on the NH-16 Dhankuni-Kharagpur section, which connects major towns and travels along India’s east coast as part of the Golden Quadrilateral project.

Similarly, with a collection of Rs 14.80 billion over the past five years, the Barajore toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh ranks fourth in terms of toll collection. Barajore situated on NH-19’s Etawah-Chakeri (Kanpur) segment, also makes up the majority of the Grand Trunk Road.

In terms of total revenue, the Gharonda toll plaza, located on the Panipat-Jalandhar segment of NH-44, India’s longest highway between Srinagar and Kanyakumari, comes fifth in place. It has collected around Rs 13.14 billion during the same period.

Other toll plazas in the top-ten list include L&T Krishnagiri Thopur on the Krishnagiri-Thumbipadi section of NH-44 in Tamil Nadu, Nawabganj on the Kanpur-Ayodhya section of NH-25 in Uttar Pradesh, Choryasi on the Bharuch-Surat stretch of NH-48 in Gujarat, Thikariya/Jaipur Plaza on the Jaipur-Kishangarh section of NH-48 in Rajasthan, and Sasaram on the Varanasi-Aurangabad stretch of NH-2 in Bihar.

Over the past five years, these ten plazas have collected a total of Rs 139.88 billion, which accounts for more than 7 per cent of all tolls collected by toll fee plazas nationwide. Additionally, as per MoRTH, between 2019–20 and 2023–24, overall, all toll plazas collected a total of Rs 1.93 trillion, with 2023–24 seeing the largest collection of Rs 558.82 billion.
