The central government is expected to inaugurate the Vizhinjam International Container Transshipment Terminal Project Phase-I soon. The project has received a commercial commissioning certificate. Besides, an approach road linking the port to National Highway (NH) 66 will be constructed soon.
The project involves construction of a greenfield, deepwater international container transshipment terminal (ICTT) at Vizhinjam in Kerala on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis for a concession period of 40 years. Phase I involves the construction of a container terminal of 800 metres, a cruise cum multipurpose terminal of 300 metres, a navy berth of 500 metres, a coast guard berth of 120 metres, a post craft berth of 100 metres, a fish landing berth of 500 metres, and a breakwater of 3,180 metres at an estimated cost of Rs 88.67 billion.
