Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has started sprinkling anti-foaming solutions to curb the toxic froth around Okhla barrage on October 22, 2024. Using around 12 to 15 tonnes of the agent, the process will continue till around November 8, 2024. Eight departments are coordinating to minimise the froth levels which indicate high levels of untreated sewage and industrial pollution in the Yamuna river. Their work involves provision of boats for dispersion of the agent and opening of barrage gates by the Irrigation and Flood Department and anti-surfactant sprinkling, area patrolling, and optimisation of sewage treatment plant operations by DJB. Additionally, other departments will ensure removal of water hyacinths, enforcements against dyeing and washing units and automobile service stations that discharge effluents into drains, etc.
Moreover, a temporary water testing laboratory is planned near Kalindi Kunj in Delhi to provide information on water quality parameters like biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, and ammoniacal nitrogen to the public. These parameters will also be monitored and the reports are planned to be made online.
