Construction work on channelisation of Tung Dhab and Gumtala Drain is underway

Construction work on the channelisation of Tung Dhab and Gumtala Drain is ongoing under the Tung Dhab Drain Rejuvenation Project. Under this, a separate channel is being developed for the segregation of industrial sewage in a covered channel and concrete lining.

The scope of the project includes rejuvenation of 20-km long Tung Dhab drain which is being polluted by industrial, dairy and domestic wastewater. 19 industries situated along the drain release 28 million litre per day of polluted waste in the drain. Domestic sewerage of 17 villages is falling into the drain along with 176 dairies discharging about 550 kilo litre per day waste, throwing livestock dung and other animal waste into the Tung Dhab drain.

The state government has proposed to establish common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) in industrial areas as per the requirement. Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation is likely to provide land to Punjab Pollution Control Board for setting up CETP.
