During the fiscal year 2023-24, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) achieved significant milestones in highway construction and capital expenditure.
Highway construction reached 12,349 km, a 20 per cent increase from the previous year, although it fell short of the annual target of 13,814 km. The majority of the construction, totalling 9,642 km, involved lane augmentation, with 2,707 km attributed to strengthening existing infrastructure. Additionally, MoRTH awarded 8,581 km of projects during 2023-24. Despite these achievements, it slightly missed its initial targets, with the construction target set at 13,814 km and the award target at 13,290 km.
The NHAI constructed around 6,644 km, with the remaining being constructed by other agencies. MoRTH set a historic record for capital expenditure at Rs 3.01 trillion in 2023-24, with Rs 2.64 trillion from the government and Rs 348.05 billion from the private sector, marking an all-time high for both. Asset monetisation receipts also reached a new high at Rs 383.34 billion, up from Rs 233.36 billion in 2022-23.
