Southern Railway finalised alignment for Musiri-Chennai New Rail Line Project in Tamil Nadu

Southern Railway (SR) has finalised alignment of the Musiri-Chennai New Rail Line Project in Tamil Nadu. According to the updated alignment, the route is expected to pass through key towns including Thuraiyur and Perambalur-the latter notably lacking direct railway connectivity at present. From there, the line is set to extend towards Chinna Salem and Kallakurichi, before integrating with existing and upcoming railway corridors across northern Tamil Nadu.

It is currently undergoing a traffic and feasibility assessment, with more advanced stages such as the Final Location Survey (FLS) and the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) yet to commence.

The project involves construction of a 350-km new broad gauge (BG) railway line between Musiri and Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Besides, FLS for the same has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 8.8 million.
