The government has granted approval for establishing two strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) facilities at Padur in Karnataka and Chandikhol in Odisha under Phase II of the petroleum reserve programme. Additionally, the RfP tender for building these storage facilities is under finalisation. Under Phase II of the petroleum reserve programme, the central government is planning to set up crude oil storage facilities at Chandikhol and Padur, with storage capacities of 2.5 million metric tonnes (mmt) and 4 mmt respectively. The programme is being implemented through Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited, a special purpose vehicle dedicated to the implementation of SPR. Under the Union Budget 2021-22, funds worth Rs 2.1 billion have been allocated for its development.
