The Bengaluru airport expansion works have been conceived with the aim to meet the increasing demand of the Silicon Valley. The project involves the construction of a new garden-themed terminal, an underground tunnel connecting the eastern boundary of the airport to the centre, and expansion of access roads along with a transport hub to seamlessly connect the airport with metro lines. The new terminal will be designed in horseshoe shape and will be implemented in two phases. The airport will also feature art installations, both static and dynamic, sharing stories of the city’s culture, people and the airport itself. To be operated by Bengaluru International Airport Limited, it is the country’s first greenfield airport terminal to be built in PPP mode. However, the terminal and other associated works are expected to be delayed by six months to one year due to the lockdown-triggered slowdown and the subsequent suspension of construction activities, labour migration and raw material shortage.
