Thoothukudi Municipal Corporation to set up DMAs for better management of water distribution network

The Thoothukudi Municipal Corporation in Tamil Nadu has planned to set up district metering areas (DMAs) under the Smart Cities Mission to better monitor and control water supply. The corporation, with assistance from the Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company as the project management consultant, has planned to set up 77 DMAs across the town. Of them, 46 DMAs will be located within the area-based development (ABD) area. The DMAs, which are essentially hydraulically discrete areas within a water supply zone, help in monitoring the system flow and pressure and for prioritising leakage control work. The DMA network for the entire corporation will be set up at a cost of Rs 1.5 billion, while setting up the network in the ABD area alone will cost Rs 990 billion. At present, the project has been sent for technical sanction.
